Photos of the Davis Furniture Warehouse Fire

This morning huge plumes of smoke bellowed out of downtown Wenatchee. The source was the warehouse for Davis Furniture located on Columbia Street behind the Davis Furniture store on South Wenatchee Avenue.

The Wenatchee World had the following article today, with information, photos and a short video of the fire. Here are some more photos of the fire,

North Central Washington Wind Storm

Wind stormA wind storm hit the west coast and continued on over the Cascades into eastern Washington late last night. Many trees and power lines went down. Lots of debris everywhere.

If I remember correctly, it was about 2:00am when I was awoken by a fierce wind that sounded like a bomb hitting the side of my house. It only took a moment to figure out that the wind storm that had plagued Seattle earlier in the day had made it's way over the mountains to us. I grabbed a flashlight, found a lighter and candles, and laid back down in bed. About five minutes later the power shut off. Luckily I had a portable radio so I could keep up to date on the storm.

I was quite discouraged to hear that my child's school wasn't canceled today, like so many other local schools. I even called them to double check. With no hot water and the food in the refrigerator already making an unpleasant order. We left the comfort of are warm bed to get dressed in the cold by candlelight and stop by McDonald's for a less than nutritional breakfast. They must be teaching a very important lesson in school today to want the children to stand outside at the bus stops with icy cold gale force winds blowing down upon them.

Feel free to share your experience with the night of the big wind in the comments section.

Prices at the Pumps

Prices at the PumpsI added a Google gadget, as they call them, to the Weather page. It is supposed to supply the local gas prices for an area around your zip code. So if you go to the weather page and your zip code has available gas prices, then you can either click the "Local Gas Prices" link or simply scroll down the page to view them.

After some initial testing it seems some cities like Conconully are showing some type of error in the gas price area. I don't know if this glitch is temporary or an ongoing problem they are having. Either way, it's out of my control.

Something else I noticed, it didn't list all gas stations, at least for the area I checked. Once again, this might just be a temporary problem with their system or they just haven't added those gas stations yet.

St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Night

On a rainy night a few months ago I was passing by Douglas when I noticed the church was lit up at night. So I stopped and took a quick photo.

Blog Updated

How this blog used to lookBlogger recently updated their system. I was planning on updating this blog for quite some time but was waiting for them to release their latest update first. I am still working out the little bugs and will be working on it for a few more days. The other reason for the lack of updates lately is completing work on a forum for the website.

2:00pm update - The "search" in the sites menu (not the blogger menu at the top of this page) now searches the North Central Washington Portal website and this blog. The search, like this blog, are free services through Google. Which means, unlike the regular North Central Washington Portal website, they can sometimes be slow and unresponsive. So if you try a search and it doesn't return any results, try the search again in a few seconds.

For the wrestling fans, don't forget that Pro Wrestling Beyond is having a show tomorrow night at the Wenatchee Community Center. It will be their first show with ladders. So if you haven't caught one of their shows yet, this might be the one not to miss.

The Mystery Painting

A Kuplin painting layered with original paintingFirst off, this painting has nothing to do with North Central Washington except that I have wasted too much time staring at it and haven't been able to finish my work on the new forum.

Be warned, before you click on the painting or this link, this can become very addictive and is more likely than not to be a complete hoax.

System Down for a Week

North Central Washington Portal has been down for maintenanceLast week I was lucky enough to recognize the warning signs, a hard drive in my computer was about to fail. Even though I keep current backups, to be on the safe side, I decided to back up the entire drive. I used blank DVD's to back up the data. The problem was, cheap blank DVD's only hold 4.5 gigabytes of data, the hard drive had almost 250 gigabytes of data. I ended up using 52 blank DVD's.

Of course, one of the signs of hard drive failure, is that they start running really slow. This means backing up onto those 52 DVD's took a very long time. Luckily, no data was lost. On my next reboot of the computer, a message ran across the monitor telling me that the hard drive was due for critical failure and needed to be immediately backed up and replaced. I'm glad I caught it early. The drive has been replaced, the data restored, and now it's time to get back to work!
